Try these healthy Halloween alternatives.
Halloween is right around the corner! What many parents (and dentists!) find most frightening about this night is the amount of candy and sugar that kids receive. Even though this night is centered around treats, it’s best to ensure that your children don’t overload on artificial sugar. Halloween doesn’t have to be all about sweets and chocolate. Instead, try making these fun and healthy Halloween snacks.
Pumpkin Clementines
- Simply peel the clementine and leave it intact. Place a small piece of cut celery on the top to make it look like a pumpkin stalk.
Spooky Banana Ghosts
- Peel a banana and cut in half. Push two chocolate chips into the banana to make eyes.
Jack-o-Lantern Orange Fruit Cups
- Slice the tops off oranges
- Using a spoon, scoop out the pulp of the oranges
- Cut out faces on each orange to resemble a jack-o-lantern
- Fill each orange with mixed fruit and serve
Raw Caramel Apples
Ingredients:
- 2 large apples
- Date Caramel Sauce (recipe below)
- 1/2 batch dark chocolate
- 1/2 c. chopped nuts of choice
- 2 craft sticks
For the caramel sauce:
- 5 dates, chopped and set in boiling water for 10 minutes
- 1 Tbsp. nondairy milk
- 1 Tbsp. coconut oil, refined
- 1 Tbsp. nut butter of choice
- 1 tsp. maple or agave syrup
Instructions
- Drain the water from the dates. In a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients for the Caramel Sauce until completely smooth. If you are having difficulties blending, simply add more nondairy milk by the teaspoon until it smooths out. Place into a bowl.
- Insert the craft stick into the apple.
- Cover the apples evenly with the caramel date sauce. Place in the freezer briefly to mildly firm up on the apples.
- Roll around in chopped nuts and drizzle with dark chocolate.
- Chill in the freezer for another 5-10 minutes until the apples set.
