Helpful tips to keep dust to a minimum.
There’s nothing worse than cleaning your house from top to bottom to still find dust lurking around the place. Whether it’s sitting on the top of the fridge, behind books, or in plain sight on shelving units, dust is quick to reappear. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also be a trigger for asthma and allergy sufferers. While you can’t eliminate household dust for good, you can keep it under control with regular cleaning – and these handy hints!
Clean with a wet mop and dust with a damp cloth.
Using a bit of water when cleaning surfaces and furniture will help to reduce household dust levels. This will help the dust stick to the mop or cloth, instead of just shifting it onto the floor. Say goodbye to your duster and pick up a wet sponge instead!
Keep your closets tidy.
Generally, a great deal of dust in your home will be coming from the fibers in your clothing. Every time you open your closet door, you’re disturbing these fibers and releasing them into the air. To stop this from happening, store as much as you can in drawers. If possible, invest in some plastic storage boxes with lids for clothes that you don’t wear regularly.
Change your bedding regularly.
Dust mites live in your bed and they lay eggs often. While there’s very little you can do to stop this from happening, wrapping your mattress in a dust cover is a great way to start. Aim to change your bedding at least once a week, too.
Use an air purifier.
Air purifiers filter the air and remove airborne participles. This is a great way to protect people with allergies and respiratory problems. However, dust mites are not airborne, so you will still need to dust often.
Work from the top down.
Dust with the laws of gravity in mind. Dust will travel downwards when you disrupt it, so you should always start dusting from the top and then work your way down.
While there is no substitute for regular dusting and cleaning, taking these preventative measures can help to control the dust in your home. Give yourself the peace of mind that you’re protected.
