With summer in full swing, more and more time is being spent outdoors. The warm weather is the perfect time to spend with your loved ones barbecuing, swimming, and enjoying all that your backyard has to offer. While spending time at home this summer, keep these safety tips in mind to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun summer.
- Do not allow children or pets to play around the barbecue. Use a chalk line or safety cones to establish a safety zone so children know where they can and cannot play.
- Always have a fire extinguisher or hose nearby to put out any unexpected fires while grilling.
- Place the grill in an open area, away from any buildings, low hanging trees, or other flammable items. Never leave a lit grill unattended to help stop the possibility of any fires.
- Have a self-latching gate around your pool to stop children and pets from going into the pool at undesirable times.
- Remove all chairs, tables, and anything else that a child could use to climb over the gate at least two feet away from the pool gate.
- Install a safety approved cover on your pool to block any access into the pool. Remind everyone not to play on the pool cover.
- Make sure all suction outlets, or drains, are covered with an industry standard grate. Regularly check that the cover is not broken or cracked, and repair it if need be.
- To prevent mosquitos from invading your backyard, make sure there is no standing water around. This includes potted plants, dog water bowls, and any buckets.
