Safety Tips for Summer Sunshine

Safety Tips for Summer Sunshine

Enjoy the sunshine, surf, and sea without getting burnt this summer.

Summer is almost upon us, and many are prepping their beach towels, barbecue, and pool essentials for the fun summer line up. We don’t mean to rain on your summer parade, but sparing a few minutes to prep for summer safety will allow you to enjoy the whole season without painfully peeling. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States – but you can take steps to minimize your risk.

Sun safety:

  • Stay in the shade when you can. Seek the shade at midday.
  • Wear hats with wide brims to shield your face, ears, and neck.
  • Select clothes made with a tight weave, as they protect better than clothes with a loose weave.
  • Wear sunglasses with protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Drink plenty of water to compensate for sweating in the heat.
  • Wear sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher).

Sunscreen application:

  • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun.
  • Apply liberally and smooth it into your skin for maximum protection.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Children and babies should use a higher SPF.
  • Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time – discard bottles after 1-2 years.
  • Reapply every two hours, after getting wet, or sweating heavily.
