What to Do If You’re in an Accident But Didn’t Get the Other Driver’s Information?

In an accident but didn’t get insurance information – what now?

Car accidents can be dizzying and stressful at the best of times. Sometimes, we get into accidents and completely forget to take down the other driver’s insurance information. Perhaps you were flustered or shocked. Maybe they didn’t want to divulge anything. It could have even been a hit-and-run. Regardless, the responsibility now lies with you. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to make the auto insurance claims process a bit easier.

Check everyone for injuries

Always make sure you check yourself and others for injuries that were caused in the accident. Even if you feel fine, you may need medical attention. Whiplash and brain injuries don’t often display obvious symptoms right away.

Call the police

You should always call the police in the event of an accident. If everyone seems unharmed or the accident appears minor, you could always use your area’s non-emergency police number. If there has been injury and serious damage, however, call 911. Make sure to obtain a copy of the police report, too.

Write down details

As soon as you can, jot down everything you can remember about the event. Write down the date, time, location, anything you can remember about the driver and their vehicle. The more information the better.

Call your insurance company

You should notify your insurance company even if you don’t have the other driver’s insurance information. You should also notify them even if the accident was your fault! Providing a police report and as much information as possible can help them to resolve your claim quickly and efficiently.
